防霉涂料是其涂膜能够抑制霉菌繁殖、生长的功能型涂料， 主要用于通风不良的潮湿场所，以及环境中富含营养物的工厂建筑物墙面涂饰，起美化和保护作用。霉菌的发生，不仅使受侵蚀的涂层表面十分难看，在深层长出的 霉菌还会冲破漆膜造成开裂和剥落，霉菌散发着特有的恶臭，生活在这种环境中的人们，身心无法愉快，健康受到威胁。
建筑防霉涂料的主要特点是这类涂料既具有优良的防霉性能，又具备良好的装饰性能。在霉菌容易滋生的环境中的建筑物表面涂刷上防霉涂料以后，建筑物便不易发霉，又因为建筑防霉涂料是用于建筑物的内、外墙、顶棚或地面的，因而还必须具有较好的装饰作用。通常是通过在涂料中添加某种抑制霉菌剂而达到目的。
需要注意的是，常规的有机防霉涂料是含有生物毒性药物，而无机防霉涂料是不含有生物毒性药物就能抑制霉菌生长发展的一种防护用涂料。无机防霉涂料具有较强的杀菌防霉作用，而且具有较强的防水性，涂覆表面后，无论天潮湿还是干燥，涂膜都不会发生脱落现象。防霉涂料主要用于浴室、地下室等潮湿面的涂装，用于木板、脚踏板、水泥墙壁等各种建材的防霉。
