在标准大气压，一定温度条件下，空气中水蒸汽达到饱和/即湿度100%，则单位体积空气中所含的水汽量是恒定的。相对湿度则是指空气中所含水汽量与饱和状态(100%)所含的水汽量的比值。集装箱是一个相对封闭的环境，通过缝隙或者通气孔与外界的气体交换在短时间内是有限的。白天在太阳照射下，箱内温度很高(38C),湿度处于比较低的水平(65%)；夜晚来临，温度有比较大的下降(30C)，但是整个空气中的含水量并没有大的变化(还是27g/m3)，则相对湿度急剧上升(从左表中可以查出，可达90%以上)，如果温度进一步下降到25C,则相对湿度会达到100%，多余的水蒸汽将凝结成小水珠，形成“集装箱雾雨”。“集装箱雾雨”会使货物受潮、长霉或生锈。为确保使用足够的干燥剂充分吸收水蒸汽，使箱内的相对湿度始终保持在100%以下，避免集装箱雾雨的产生，保证了货物的运输安全。

集装箱海运过程中，影响箱内湿度变化的因素非常多，始发地的温湿度、运输经过海域的温湿度、目的地的温湿度都会影响到集装箱中需要去除的水汽量。上面提到的用量只是我们的建议用量，一般来讲：运输周期越长，整个运输过程中的湿度和温度变化越大，就需要使用更多的集装箱干燥剂。另外，集装箱在运输船上的堆放位置，集装箱在码头被堆放的时间，这些往往都不是用户所能指控的，但也必须在决定用量的时候充分予以考虑。
